Ghana’s Energy Minister, John Jinapor, is scheduled to deliver a national address today, Monday, April 27, at 2:00 p.m., providing an update on recent developments in the country’s electricity distribution sector.

The briefing comes amid growing public concern over the stability and management of the national power supply, following a series of major incidents. These include a recent fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre and significant leadership changes within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region.

The minister is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the Akosombo fire and outline measures being taken to address ongoing challenges within the power sector. His address will also shed light on the government’s response to the disruptions caused by the incident, as well as broader reforms within the electricity distribution system.

A key issue likely to feature prominently in the briefing is the directive for the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to step aside while investigations into the fire are conducted. The incident has significantly impacted the national grid, resulting in power outages across several regions.

In addition, the minister is expected to address recent leadership restructuring within the Electricity Company of Ghana in the Ashanti Region. The changes come in response to concerns about the region’s capacity to effectively manage electricity distribution in the wake of the disruptions and ongoing sector challenges.
